Catherine Conkey is a contemporary quilt artist, teacher, and long arm quilter residing in Portland, Oregon. Catherine began quilting 15 years ago, coming into it with a background in art and design. She utilizes and enjoys a broad range of styles and techniques, but is perhaps known best for her curved piecing and innovative use of fabric and color. Her newest body of work is, however, a departure from curved piecing, and combines her early love of drawing portraits with her love of quilt making. She calls this unique and innovative style “Playful Portraiture”, and it combines piecing and appliqué to contextually depict people in a somewhat whimsical, contemporary folk art style. Catherine offers classes, workshops, and presentations in this and other techniques, including a co-presentation with mother, Judy Johnson, on the use of color, fabrics, and developing your own personal palette in quilt making.
